THE OCEANS II (ISSUE 7)<br \/>\nThree Poems by Lynn White<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>CANDLES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How many candles must I light<br \/>\nto commemorate all the dead souls,<br \/>\nall the lives wasted in wars without end.<br \/>\nSo many that candle making has become<br \/>\na profitable industry.<br \/>\nThe more deaths,<br \/>\nthe more candles.<br \/>\nWill there be anyone left<br \/>\nto light a candle for me?<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NIGHTFALL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s that time when<br \/>\nDay closes,<br \/>\ndown,<br \/>\nshuts up shop<br \/>\ndraws down the blinds,<br \/>\nso that Night can fall<br \/>\ndown.<br \/>\nAnd it does,<br \/>\nevery day,<br \/>\nshutting out the light<br \/>\nuntil<br \/>\nday breaks<br \/>\nand the sun shines<br \/>\nthrough<br \/>\nrising up<br \/>\nthrough the dark,<br \/>\nonly<br \/>\nwaiting for Night<br \/>\nto drag it down<br \/>\nagain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SKULL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The skull lies desolate<br \/>\non the bare mountain side.<br \/>\nJust lies there among the rocks.<br \/>\nLies still with a few accompanying bones.<br \/>\nEach day it decays as wind and rain weather it<br \/>\nand destroys its form and substance so that it wastes<br \/>\naway and fades into the landscape and decays.<br \/>\nIf it had come to rest lower down the mountain<br \/>\nit would have sunk into the boggy peat moss<br \/>\nand risen with hair and hide intact with,<br \/>\nthe cause of death discernible, with<br \/>\nits last meal of grass or rabbit<br \/>\nstill there inside its stomach.<br \/>\nPreserved by nature.<br White<\/strong> lives in north Wales. Her work is influenced by issues of social justice and events, places and people she has known or imagined. She is especially interested in exploring the boundaries of dream, fantasy and reality. Her poem &#8216;A Rose For Gaza&#8217; was shortlisted for the Theatre Cloud &#8216;War Poetry for Today&#8217; Competition 2014.
