PIN QUARTERLY JOURNAL (ISSUE 5)
EDITOR’S NOTE
Raising the bar, surpassing expectations…
Selecting and editing works for publication in PIN Quarterly Journal is guided by the quest for excellence and continuous improvement. Applying these principles guarantees positive results – every issue is a bedrock/standard for overall improvement of subsequent issues. Accordingly, this issue is miles ahead of previous ones in terms of quality and appeal of submissions from poets in Nigeria and across the oceans.
Composed of 15 columns, as against the regular 13, this issue has two new columns viz; ‘The Cradle’ and ‘Photo-Poetry’. While the former is dedicated to the promotion of works by budding poet students of secondary schools and tertiary institutions, the latter aims at establishing a viable relationship between photography and poetry. Pioneering ‘The Cradle’ are Hauwa Shaffii Nuhu (Bayero University, Kano), Samuel Oluwatobi Olatunji (University of Lagos) and Bona Solomon (University of Ibadan). Interestingly, Hauwa and Samuel were both shortlisted for the Nigerian Students Poetry Prize 2016 with their works, ‘rain’ and ‘Our Mother’s Prayer’. Photo-Poetry features Ayomide Festus’ Life is… alongside a photograph taken by me in Lagos sometime ago.
On the Spot comes in two successive parts viz: the President, Association of Nigerian Authors, Denja Abdullahi talks to PIN about his literary sojourn and ANA related activities and Charry Adannaya Onwu-Otuyelu, a veteran writer and ex-soldier (medical) introduces us to her writings and literary achievements. Spoken Waves beams its searchlight on Uche Uwadinachi, Nigerian Writers Awards’ Spoken Word Poet of the Year (2015) and Iyanu Adebiyi whose recent spoken word video ‘Up Nepa’ continues to garner accolades.
On linguistic terrain, Sir Eriata Oribhabor carves a new path with his Naija Languej essay, ‘Okitipupa to Lagos’ a humour-coated travelogue. ‘Tongues of Poetry’ features a panegyric in Hausa by Aminuddeen Ladan Abubakar in honour of Dakta Bukar Usman (OON), a folklorist, creative writer, historian and retired Federal Permanent Secretary (1999).
Our Special Contributors are Chinua Ezenwa-Ohaeto, first runner-up, Etisalat Flash Fiction Prize 2014 and Ojoogun Fasilat Oluwatobi, a student-poet of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria. Chinua’s flash fiction entitled ‘Cut’ excels in twists and turns while Fasilat’s poem ‘Arewa; Eleyin Ju Ege’ adorns beauty in elegant words. Other columns, Across the Oceans, Blazing Hot, Crispy Satire, Book Reviews, Food Poetry, Erotic Zone and Poetic Insight contain befitting works.
Since this month of October marks PIN’s one year of existence, this issue is worthy of an anniversary edition filled with mind-enlivening words.
Your feedback will be highly appreciated.
